In 1980, Dr. Gilbert completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency training at the West Virginia University Medical Center at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He is a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and has held these active credentials for more than 40 years.
Training and Education
Prior to his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency training, Dr. Gilbert completed his four-year Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the WVU School of Dentistry in Morgantown. He received the Outstanding Senior Dental Student Award in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for his interest and excellence in the field while a dental undergraduate.
Prior to dental school, Dr. Gilbert graduated Cum Laude with a four-year bachelor’s degree in pre-medicine from WVU. He was a Presidential Benedum Distinguished Scholar and was involved in many academic, social, and fraternal organizations as a college undergraduate.
Affiliations and Other Professional Activities
Dr. Gilbert is a clinical assistant professor with the WVU School of Dentistry-Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department. He has held this position since 1981. Dr. Gilbert served as a state examiner for the West Virginia State Board Dental Anesthesia Subcommittee for more than 25 years.
Dr. Gilbert also served on the West Virginia Board of Dentistry as a full voting Board Member. Dr. Gilbert is also past president of the West Virginia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and past president of the New River Dental Component Society. For more than 12 years, he held the office of West Virginia Delegate to the American Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons.
At the national level, he completed a six-year term on the Commission on Professional Conduct for the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and is well-respected among his peers.
Dr. Gilbert has published several scientific articles and lectured to dental students, various dental organizations, civic groups, and the general public. He currently maintains hospital staff privileges with local and surrounding hospitals near his Summersville, WV office location. He has also served on the hospital Board of Summersville Regional Medical Center, which is now a WVU Hospital. Dr. Gilbert maintains active staff priviledges at Plateau Medical Center, which is now a CAMC Hospital branch.
Family
As a native West Virginian, Dr. Gilbert has family roots in Kanawha, Boone, Greenbrier, and Nicholas Counties. He was raised in the Charleston/Kanawha Valley area and graduated third in his class from Sissonville High School, just north of Charleston.
Dr. Gilbert and his lovely wife Shella stay quite busy in their non-professional life with their blended family of five wonderful children, who range in ages from 38 to 17. In his remaining “spare” time, Dr. Gilbert enjoys fishing, boating, and spending vacation time along the Carolina Coast enjoying the beach. His other interests at home include the family cat, CoCo, and his loyal German Shepherd, Mable and new addition, Heidi. As an avid WVU fan, Dr. Gilbert follows Mountaineer sports passionately, rarely missing a game.
